SIZE:
Derek has very good size for a 2019 Pro Style QB at 6’2” 182 lbs. He has a tall build, able to survey the entire field with good vision. Throws with a high release point and fully extended arm motion for added strength. Should be able to add bulk to his frame over the next year before entering the collegiate level.
ACCURACY:
His throws show good precision, hitting his receivers while in stride. Threw for a 65% completion rate last season. His throws include a tight spiral, getting to his receivers in a hurry. Good timing and anticipation of receivers routes.
ARM STRENGTH:
Derek throws with a rocket of an arm. He’s able to fire it into tight windows of space within the secondary with high velocity throws. Able to extend the field with bombs that are made with accuracy and touch.
RELEASE:
An over the top delivery with a fully extended release, which comes across in a hurry. He does a nice job adjusting the angles of his delivery when in tight spaces. Solid footwork prior to set ups.
THROW ON RUN:
An athletic QB who does a nice job getting to the outside. Derek is most comfortable within the pocket but shows good patience and calm while on the run. This is an area in which he can work to improve on with quickness and body rotation.
FOOTWORK:
Displays good agility within the pocket, able to side-step incoming pressure. A long stride runner, able to pick up yards in a hurry. Good spacing and stride on his set ups. Would like to see a quicker first step.
POISE:
Very confident in his abilities as a QB, a strong leader on the field. 2nd Team All-County, HM All-State. He’s not easily distracted by the pressure around him, stays focused and determined to complete the play.
DECISION MAKING:
Derek wastes very little time getting the ball to his receivers. Decisive with his throws, showing good judgment and ball placement.
TOUCH:
Very good trajectory on his deep passes, able to add touch to his vertical throws. Also does a nice job reducing the velocity of his throws, creating a softer release at the short and intermediate range.
